On Endings

I’m struggling to make peace 

with endings,

because I don’t know if I’ve learned 

when they’re necessary. 

In nearly 30 years 

of academic learning, 

I only dropped one course 

because it was truly awful.

And my friend dropped it. 

So I dropped it, too. 

I went on to take 

a much weirder course 

through independent study

that had no assignments 

and no real structure.

It was incredible.

I wonder about all of the things 

that we do not learn 

when we are unable

 - or unwilling - 

to appreciate endings.
